Why teal and orange refuses to die.
It has been the punchline of colour grading criticism for fifteen years. Supercuts of blockbuster posters, all the same two colours. And yet open any contemporary film, prestige series or phone camera's cinematic mode and there it is again, in some slightly more tasteful dilution. Mockery has not dislodged it, which usually means the thing being mocked is solving a real problem.
Skin is orange, and nothing else is
Human skin, across every ethnicity, occupies a surprisingly narrow band of hue. Melanin and haemoglobin concentrations vary enormously in lightness and in saturation, but the underlying hue sits in a wedge from roughly yellow-orange to orange-red. Colour scientists and colourists call it the skin line, and on a vectorscope it is drawn as a literal line on the graticule.
This is the load-bearing fact. If your subject is a person — and in narrative filmmaking it nearly always is — then the single most important element in the frame has a known, fixed hue. Everything else in the composition is negotiable.
So: how do you make the most important thing separate from its background, without moving it, lighting it differently, or changing the lens? You push the background toward the complement of orange. That is cyan-blue. Teal.
Complementary contrast is a separation tool
Two colours opposite each other on the wheel produce the maximum perceived difference the eye can register at a given lightness. Painters have used it since long before cinema. Placing a warm subject against a cool field creates depth without needing any depth cue — the warm advances, the cool recedes.
Cinema has a structural reason to lean on this that photography does not. A film is watched in motion, often at low light levels, frequently on a compressed stream where fine detail is the first thing to go. Separation that survives all of that has to live in colour, not in edge detail. Teal and orange is what remains legible after the bitrate is done with it.
The version that actually looks good
The reason the grade has a bad reputation is not the concept. It is the implementation — global saturation pushes and channel curves that swing the entire image, turning skin the colour of a traffic cone and shadows the colour of a swimming pool.
The fix is to make both tints luminance-dependent. Halation's split toning applies the shadow colour through a mask that fades out as pixels get brighter, and the highlight colour through a mask that fades in as they do. Both use smooth ramps, and the two masks deliberately overlap in the midtones so there is no hard transition where one hands off to the other. Skin, which mostly lives in the midtones, receives a diluted amount of each and stays close to where it was.
The blend mode matters just as much. Both tints are applied with W3C soft-light rather than a straight mix. Soft-light preserves the underlying luminance relationships — it shifts colour without flattening the tonal structure it lands on. A linear blend toward teal will grey out your shadows; soft-light toward teal will tint shadows that still have shape in them.
In the Cinematic preset the numbers are: shadow tint #1d6f80 at 38%, highlight tint #ffab63 at 24%. The shadow tint is stronger, and it is a desaturated slate blue rather than a vivid cyan. The highlight tint is a pale honey, not orange. Both are pulled well back from the poster-art version.
The parameter that protects the face
Split toning is only half of the defence. The other half is vibrance.
Saturation multiplies every pixel's distance from grey equally, which means the pixels that were already saturated — usually skin under warm light — go furthest and clip first. Vibrance is saturation that ramps down as a pixel gets more saturated, so flat regions like a hazy sky come up while already-vivid regions stay put.
Halation adds a second term on top of that: a factor that detects pixels whose channel relationships look like skin — a moderate red-green gap with a smaller green-blue gap — and reduces the vibrance boost applied to them by up to 55%. It is a crude heuristic and it is not trying to be a face detector. It only needs to stop the one failure mode that ruins the grade.
Which is why the Cinematic preset runs vibrance at +14 while saturation sits at −7. The overall image gets slightly less colourful; the flat parts of it get more. That combination is doing most of the work people attribute to the split tone.
When to use something else
The grade is a separation tool for warm subjects against neutral or cool surroundings. If your frame has no person and no warm subject — a snow scene, a grey cityscape, a food shot on a white table — there is nothing for the teal to separate from, and pushing it just makes the image cold.
Try the opposite in that case: tint the shadows warm and the highlights cool. It is an unusual, slightly nostalgic combination, and because so few images use it, it tends to read as a deliberate choice rather than as a default. Golden and Komorebi in the preset rail both lean that way, from different directions.
